Activities to rehabilitate and maintain feeder roads in Nyamasheke District are on track and will be achieved in due time, according to the district officials.

The district authorities released the information following some misreporting that the Kingdom of The Netherlands had suspended funds allocated to rehabilitate the district's feeder roads.

On December 1st 2013, the Government of Rwanda signed a financing agreement with the Kingdom of The Netherlands to improve feeder roads that will enable rural farmers to take their produce to markets. The financing agreement consists of rehabilitating 162.8 km and maintaining 664.02 km of feeder roads in five districts namely; Burera, Gicumbi, Musanze districts in Northern Province and Rusizi, Nyamasheke districts in Western Province.The activities are on good progress.

In particular, in November 2015, Nyamasheke District signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources (MINAGRI) and the Roads Transport Development Agency (RTDA) to rehabilitate 25.4 km and maintain 109.14 of feeder roads. The district has already signed a contract with a company that will do the work.

The District's Advisory Council President Telesphore Ndabamenye made clear that the financing has never been suspended, but it's the first tender that was canceled due to proposal of budget that was higher than the planned budget.

Kamali Aime Fabien, the Mayor of Nyamasheke District confirmed that the detailed design for those roads was conducted properly in consultation with RTDA, MINAGRI and other stakeholders. He added that Nyamasheke residents should not have worries about those roads as the contractor is ready to start the rehabilitation process.

The Permanent Secretary in Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources Innocent Musabyimana has also told IGIHE that; “activities to rehabilitate and maintain roads are on good progress. The collaboration between the Ministry and the Dutch Embassy keeps thriving.”
